I don't think the OP has really made up his mind that he wants to sponsor her. He is just frustrated that he cannot spend enough time cohabitating to make sure. I think he is being smart that he does not want to rush into marriage.

It seems that OP is trying to use the common law sponsorship so that they can get together and figure it out whether they are made for each other or not after the fact. No offense to you OP, but you don't seem to consider how serious common law sponsorship really is. You can't go about taking on sponsorship just to see if you are made for each other.

next time your girlfriend comes to canada, once she is in, before her 'stamp' expires in her passport, file a visitors extension online. She can legally stay her in canada until that extension is either approved or denied. If it is approved, she will have whatever amount of time they give her on the extension to continue to stay. She will not be able to work, for obvious reasons, so you will need to support her 100% while she is here, or she will have to have some money saved to help out. This should give you a few months to get an idea about one another. If it is working well, then you can file for another extension before it runs out again, keep rinsing and repeating until you figure out where you wish to proceed from there.

For the record, I don't think Rob was trying to make you feel/sound like an idiot. You clearly stated you can't live with your g/f for one year to gain common law status. You made this statement in a forum about family class sponsorship. How were we all to assume you only meant you wanted to date this girl regularly to decide if you wanted to commit with her or not?

I think Rob was only trying to point out the obvious. Rob was not making you sound like an idiot. In fact, Rob has provided me, and others, invaluable information on this forum. File for an extension of your girlfriend's visa the next time she comes to visit and repeat. Simple.

Do you know her enough to know you want her to be your wife? If you don't, Rob is correct that family sponsorship would not be the right way to go. For example, if you are still unsure, but you go ahead and sponsor your girlfriend here, and she lands and gets her PR, and if things don't work out between the 2 of you, you will still be on the hook financially to provide for her for 3 years (housing, clothing, food etc.) and if you do not provide the necessary support to her, she can obtain social assistance and the government will bill you for it 100% (if you do not pay back the government, they will get a court order and the government will garnish your wages directly from your employer). Sponsoring someone is a very serious matter, and it is a huge financial commitment.

Additionally, although her PR would be conditional, if the relationship ends it does not necessairly mean that CIC will take her PR back.

You are posting this in the "Family Class Sponsorship" area of the forum. So i am advising you based on you wanting to sponsor your gf.

If you want to find the best way for her to get visitor status to stay in Canada with you, then i would advise you post this question also in the visitor section of this forum: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/visitors-b8.0/
You will get people there that have more knowledge of ways to get and extend visitor status.

If you are sure, go ahead. Just remember that your girlfriend cannot work, study or do anything of the sort on a visitor's visa. If she does, and if she if caught by CBSA or CIC, she will lose her status and will be deported and band from Canada. Do you think you can support your girlfriend for at least a year? Do you think your girlfriend could or would live like that for a year?

• persons who have overstayed a visa, visitor record, work permit or student permit;
• persons who have worked or studied without being authorized to do so under the Act;
• persons who have entered Canada without the required visa or other document required under the Regulations;
• persons who have entered Canada without a valid passport or travel document (provided valid documents are acquired by the time CIC seeks to grant permanent residence).
