Hello folks,
My wife has both a PR card renewal application and Citizenship application in the works. There is a decent chance that her citizenship application will be done first before her PR card renewal application. If that happens, what happens to your PR card application? Does IRCC get flagged that the applicant is now a citizen and the application is cancelled? Or do they just issue the PR card anyway - which would be invalid on arrival? Is it recommended that you contact IRCC to request a cancellation?

I know one person who was doing the same (had both applications in parallel), but she got her new PR card right before the oath ceremony and just handed it over at the ceremony.

Thanks

If it was me, I probably wouldn't worry about it and just inquire at the oath ceremony. They could look into it there. I would imagine that worse case, they just ask you to destroy it when you receive it.

My wife has her oath ceremony next month so it is very likely she will be a citizen before her PR card application is done. We will just ask at the ceremony what to do.

Thanks. I'll do so after the oath ceremony. No sense it cancelling anything until after she is officially a citizen.

I think citizenship status granted would supercede pr card application and CIC would automatically cancel it once the OP becomes citizen.
pr card would be automatically cancelled in the system anyway, so I doubt if it would be mailed to applicant. Probably a refund will be issued for $50.

Make sure you mention this to the officer during/after oath ceremony so they can make sure that application is suspended/cancelled.

i actually found an answer on their website they do inform Sydney CPC to cancel your application
Applicant forwarded PR card to CPC-Sydney for renewal
If the applicant does not have the PR card because it was forwarded to CPC Sydney for renewal, the local office must ensure that CPC Sydney will not send a new PR card to the applicant as the applicant will no longer be a permanent resident. The local office must send an urgent e-mail to PRC-Sydney-Urgent and request the cancellation of the application for a new PR card. Information such as the UCI number in GCMS, the date that the applicant applied for the new card, and the date that the applicant became a Canadian citizen should be included in the e-mail.

Thanks walsaad. Interesting info. Though my wife still has her card. So when she surrenders it at the oath ceremony, I wonder if the local office will send that e-mail. The info above seems to happen if the applicant does not have their PR card.

I mean its kind of the same situation but the best thing to do is to let them know during the oath. My guess is that the procedure is the same in your case

According to eCAS, my wife's new PR card was mailed out on November 2nd. Since her oath ceremony is on the 6th, it is very likely that she will get her card after the oath ceremony. We will ask what to do with it when it arrives. I assume they will tell her to destroy it when it arrives.

My wife had her oath ceremony today. She spoke to one of the IRCC staff there (the one who was collecting all the PR cards from everyone) and was told that if the new card comes after she becomes a citizen, to either mail it back to IRCC or destroy it. The IRCC employee was pretty nonchalant about it. I *think* the proper thing to do is to mail it back. We may ask the call centre again for what to do. In any case, I guess it is not that big of a deal either way...

I noticed that the entry for her PR card application in eCAS completely disappeared when they flipped her status for her Citizenship application to "COMPLETE". She now only has the entry for her citizenship application. Makes sense, it must automatically cancel any pending PR card renewal applications when her official citizenship status is entered in the system. Still no card, curious if it comes or not (I assume it will since it was supposedly mailed out before her status update to citizen).
