Canceled and valid passports both expiring in the future

1. Its not clear in your response if the new passport makes any reference to the old passport such as 'passport 1234' now replaces passport '5678'

2. Is it standard practice in your country of Citizenship not to annotate cancelled passports to this effect (this is most unusual)?

No reference, but there are news releases (e.g the US Embassy and other EU institutions) mentioning the invalidation of all passports that are not biometric. For that reason, no reference is made in the old passport that it's invalid... Seems like the Canadian Embassy was aware when I traveled three years ago to do the visa switchover...

1. Each time a country releases a new format passport they send a version/or detail thereof to other countries protocol departments which is also shared with border/immigration authorities so in theory should be something CBSA/CIC are aware especially if the new biometric passport upgrades the citizen to visitor visa exempt status.

2. As advised include the press releases - CIC deal with anything unusual which having 2 seemingly valid passports is in this territory by taking your application down the non routine track. You best make sure your travel dates and declared absences are water tight.

3. Does your country's border control track your entries/exits (regardless of stamping as per EU laws on granting permission to enter for those with a right of residence under EU law)? This would be useful to have if CIC ever decide to RQ you.

A side question here.

The reason I traveled back to my home country was to get the new passport. I entered the border with the old, invalid passport. As such, the border agent didn't stamp (but didn't ask any questions because many citizens were traveling back for that reason). The agent just confirm the reason I entered the country was to get the new passport, and just looked at my old passport without stamping. Now, how on god's green earth do I prove that I traveled to my home country on the date I claimed I traveled? I have the ticket as well as the credit card statement with the purchase (no boarding passes). Any thoughts?
