No reference, but there are news releases (e.g the US Embassy and other EU institutions) mentioning the invalidation of all passports that are not biometric. For that reason, no reference is made in the old passport that it's invalid... Seems like the Canadian Embassy was aware when I traveled three years ago to do the visa switchover...
