Hello, I have landed in Canada and not kind of liking it being here. I am feeling really homesick and depressed at the same time. I have activated my GIC. Please can someone advise me what is the process to cancel study visa and get back GIC and tuition fees? I spoke to CIBC bank, they said, "give us any letter which proves you are not going to stay in canada and we will process your refund". How can I get such a letter? What is the process of cancelling a visa.
Please

sorry to hear you are having a difficult time. I don't know how to get your GIC deposit back on what letter they require, but for your study permit, once you get back to your home country you can send an email to IRCC about your withdrawal (attach letter from your sch confirmation you have withdrawn/unenrolled).

Unfortunately the banker made it difficult for you. GIC, just like other investment account can be cancelled anytime. The only complications that I know is cancelling retirement savings, that gave you credit during tax filing, like RRSP. Though you can cancel it, but CRA wil reassess your tax position.

I read on the terms of the GIC, it says you can cancel at no cost when after your arrival in Canada, but there is 14days that may be applied. You need to read terms of your GIC account. It shouldn't be different from the rest. If you decided that you can't stay here and want to go back home, be decisive and ask where is that specific requirement on the terms and condition, if possible put your request in writing.

PART D: Student GIC Program
  1. You may, at your option, choose to enroll in the Student GIC Program. If you do, you must transfer at least CAD$10,000 or the equivalent in the selected currency to us, of which CAD$8,000 will be invested in GICs and the remainder deposited into your Account (less any applicable fees). If you select the Student GIC Program option on the Online Platform, you may choose to close your Account after your arrival in Canada, at no cost to you.

I don't know the process of cancellation but sorry to hear of your case. I do recall some 12 years back when I first landed in UK for study it was crazy. Especially the weather makes it all the more depressing when you really don't know anyone. If you find some good friends it makes it easy to get through. I eventually stayed there for 2 years and have to say were the best days of my life. Made some great friends, new cuisine, new skills. You get the point. If you hang in there just a little more each day things do start getting better.

Have you checked if your college has any student councilors, maybe they can help you out. Eventually decision is yours. If you really feel like you cant get through mentally then no point suffering.

so first i need to withdraw from my university and go back home. After reaching home, i need to contact IRCC about this. Right?

The cibc team has told me this
"Please send us the documents related to your concern(any cancellation document from your college or anything that proves you are not going to stay in Canada) And we will refund your amount"

Exactly this is what I am going through. The weather is so unpredictable that it made you feel stressed. I am trying to cop up here by going out everyday, trying to make some friends but still my mind is telling me to get out of here. I will surely check with university for student councilor, thanks for the reply man. It feels good to know that it will pass and everything will be alright.

I would say change location especially for weather from NL to Toronto, Windsor, Hamilton, Halifax.
Or
Just visit family for some month s and deffer the program and get admission in other province like Ontario (Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor) or Alberta (Calgary)

Vancouver is so expensive but weather is better than others.

bro I am in St. John's NL. The weather is really difficult to cop up with.
Bro, you scared me. I also secured admission at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Where are you from and this is the only reason you decided to go back home?

Mostly regions in Canada has very harsh weather even Toronto. But when we were applying to Canada, we all know this. Its not like that we can not survive there.

Yes , but some places does not have that much bad weather like Toronto, Windsor , Hamilton, Halifax.

Bus services are so good in Toronto 24 hours.

It always does. Our minds are designed to object the slightest of change and if you resist it enough you will start feeling differently. Don't want to get into too much philosophy but I think talking to some student councilors there might work as they mostly have some workshops, volunteering services, etc. where you can make some friends and hang out. But gauge yourself and don't push yourself too hard.

I would say, we should motivate him, and you also know its not really easy to get back home and then apply for some other place. Many students living there in NL, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Manitoba. These province has the coolest cities in Canada. He should give himself a little bit time, everything will be alright. Body take time to settle down with the environment.
