Canadian Residency Medical Exam Timeline

Hi guys! Thanks for all the information you've posted here. It's been a great resource as we've worked through the application process. However, I have one question I haven't been able to resolve. I am from the states, and my husband is sponsoring me. At what point in the application process should I have my medical exam? I've seen places where they say you must get it before you submit your application. The official information says you should get it after they send you a form. But in the document checklist it says a "Proof of medical examination for the sponsored person and each of his or her dependents" is required to submit the paperwork. . . which, theoretically, you have to do before you can have them send you the medical form.

I'm at a loss. If possible, I'd like to give them every scrap of paperwork they might need, correctly filled out from the start. I'd appreciate any insight!

Where exactly are you reading you should get it after they send you a form?

For a spousal sponsorship, you always get the medical up-front.

Great! That will work out much better. I've already scheduled an appointment, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't throwing a cog in the works.

cic.gc.ca/english/information/medical/medexams-perm.asp is where I got the impression I should wait. It reads: "Instructions on how to take the medical examination will normally be sent to you after you submit your application to the visa office." It sort of implies that you submit your application, receive instructions on the medical exam, and THEN go have that medical exam.

i think that is for other things.. other visas and maybe the skilled worker category

i know when my dh got his meds done the dr. said congrats! and hes like what? and hes like you're almost done.. so i guess they assume acceptance if you get the meds in some visa cases?

Right. That info on the website is just general info about getting a medical exam and is not specific to family sponsorship applications. For sponsorship applications, you must do a medical beforehand and send in proof with your application.

Jill, no, they don't assume acceptance if you've got your medical done. The medical is just one of the requirements that you have to complete before sending in your application. The IO will still need to review your application and determine the genuineness of the relationship.
