Hi,

Im trying to figure out what type of papers I need from my us client so that I can file my taxes here in Canada as a self-employed PR.

Thanks

they will issue you a 1099-MISC, which would be the equivalent of a T4A in Canada.

That's not necessarily true about the 1099-MISC. I do various sorts of computer work on a self-employed basis and have had US clients from time to time. Most of them *don't* issue 1099-MISC forms. The same is true of Canadian clients - sometimes I get a T4 slip, sometimes I don't.

If you're self-employed, it's your responsibility to keep track of your income and expenses throughout the year. If you haven't been doing this all along, it might help to check back through your bank records.

LOL, true enough. Let me re-state - if the client asked you to complete a form W-9, then most likely you will receive a 1099-Misc.

Otherwise, you will have to rely on your own documentation, such as any invoices you sent them, payments received, etc.
