Canadian PR - Do You Need to Immigrate Right Away?

Hello, my husband and I live in Bermuda, he is Canadian and we are in the process of applying for my visa. I had my medical exam done in December (which I know is valid for one year). But, around the same time, my husband was short-listed for a job here, which, he really wants to accept, and, if he gets it, he wants to keep the job for at least for a year. We are also likely to be stuck in a lease for our apartment for at least another year.

My question is, if we apply for my visa in 2012, and the visa comes through, what sort of timeline does Canadian Immigration give you for packing up and moving to Canada? I read somewhere in the application forms that you are expected to take up residence in Canada immediately after your visa is processed. But if we are not able to move right away, will I be penalized or my visa revoked?

Thanks,
Sarina

Hello Sarinavene,

In regarding your question, I think the landing to Canada depends on validity of your Pr visa according to member(s) on this forum it expire the same time with your medical. In your case it will be December 2012, so hopeful you may land before that if your application is approved during this time. If not they will ask for another medical if your application will take longer to process and medical will expire.

Thanks,

There is a timeline for doing the "landing" procedure which is tied to the validity of your medical exam, but after that you are free to return to Bermuda to wrap things up. The residency obligation requires PRs to live in Canada for 2 of the previous 5 years. So you have up to 3 years to settle in Canada before running into problems meeting your obligation. Also, if your husband is a Canadian citizen then your PR obligation (2 of 5) is waived if you are accompanying him while living abroad.
