I hope someone can give me some advice on this, since I'm really uncertain. According to IRCC, as of November 10 2016 all dual Canadian citizens are required to have a Canadian passport to enter Canada by air. I can't post links but it's on the CIC website.
My situation: I'm Canadian by birth and my son (2 years old) is automatically Canadian through me, but we've never applied for proof of citizenship or a Canadian passport for him; we live in Italy and he carries an Italian passport. Does he therefore have to adhere to this new rule and obtain a Canadian passport before traveling to Canada? If so, what about newborns born abroad to Canadian parents? Can they simply not enter Canada for the first 8 months of their life, or however long it takes to get a certificate of Canadian citizenship plus a Canadian passport? Seems crazy to me.
On a related note, when filling out the Electronic Travel Authorization for my son, where they ask about additional nationalities should I add Canadian as a nationality? Seems like it should be consistent with the above - that is, if he's not considered dual Canadian in terms of Canadian passport requirement, then he should also not be Canadian on the ETA.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
