Hello,

I have a question. I am a Canadian living in the US and hoping to sponsor my wife , an American to Canada. I am a little confused about sponsorship financial requirement. Since I work in the US, I dont file taxes with CRA and i dont have a notice of assessment. Do i have to show proof of income? will immigration except US tax returns/filings? I have also read that immigration doesnt require proof of income from canadians living overseas just a plan that confirms that they will move to Canada. Thoughts?

While they do not require specific proof of income, if you're not working in Canada, they ask you to provide documentation showing you can support the persons you're sponsoring, including a detailed explanation of your plan in this regard. So it may be helpful to provide proof of income, savings, tax returns (if you wish), professional experience, job search and job offers, etc. If you have enough savings or whatever, it may not be necessary to provide more detail. (I have heard others here refer to specific amounts that are expected but I don't know about that)

The evidence of a plan to return to Canada is a separate section/request but may overlap in some respects (job searches and job offers for example). I sort of combined the two in a written explanation (I can't remember whether one letter or not). Note there are other aspects of showing that you do plan to return to Canada, like looking for housing, familial support, etc - it's to show your plans to return and live in Canada are serious, not just that you have enough money.
