Hello

I have a serious question about applying for Canadian citizenship.

I have had a Canadian PR card for 10 years.
I have an American Green Card (US PR card).

I got my US green card 3 months ago but have not moved to the US yet. My passport has a stamp and immigrant visa that I am a Permanent resident in the USA.

1. Can I apply for Canadian citizenship if I have accumulated 1095 days in Canada. ( 3 years in 5 years in Canada) ?
2. How will the officers look at it if I apply for Canadian citizenship with a US visa in my passport?

Thank you very much.

1. Yes you can.
2. Its of no concern to officer what you are holding in your passport. What matters to them is whether you are eligible for Canadian Citizenship.

Hi! So that means you can still apply for canadian citizenship after obtaining Greencard?

thanks for your response.. As I have a friend who lives in US since 2023 and wants to apply canadian citizenship now.. Meet physical presence.. She is just worried because she is not sure if canada allows non resident to apply for canadian citizenship as when you got GC you are no longer PR in Canada.

How did she lose it (her canadian PR) ? The original OP was in a situation where OP (at least temporarily) had both GC and Canadian PR, which is why the citizenship process was possible. As I understand it, getting a GC from USA doesn't automatically cancel Canadian PR but rather you end up losing the Canadian PR after spending some years living in the USA on the GC.

so is she eligible to apply? How you know this if you don't mind asking thank you

Having valid Canadian PR status at the time of application and during the oath ceremony is a requirement for citizenship IIUC, so if she really isn't a Canadian PR anymore, then she's not eligible. But if she's just assuming she's not a Canadian PR anymore since she has a GC - she might be wrong and be in a situation where she has both - meaning she could be eligible to apply.

She is canadian PR for 8 years before obtaining GC an meet physical presence.. She is thinking it's impossible to apply for citizenship because people said she has to surrender her PR card after having GC.. no?

Are you saying that she officially renounced her PR status and submitted a renouncement application to IRCC?

No she did not... But according to other people you have to surrender PR card after getting GC

Stop listening to people who have no idea what they are talking about.
