Hi there. I'm a Canadian citizen living with my Italian husband in Italy. We are expecting a baby and I was wondering if our child will be eligible for Canadian citizenship even if he/she is born in Italy...

Thank you for your help!

If you are a Canadian citizen who was born or naturalized in Canada, then your child will be Canadian, no matter where he/she is born. However, the child will not be able to pass Canadian citizenship on to another generation born abroad. If you were born abroad and are a Canadian citizen because your parent was a Canadian citizen, then your child born in Italy will not be a Canadian citizen at birth.

Christina, your Italian-born baby will be a Canadian citizen no matter if you were born in Canada or became a Canadian citizen through naturalization. But he/she will not be able to pass the Canadian citizenship to his or her children if they are also born abroad.
