Hello.

My name if Jeff. I am a Canadian living in Japan who is in the process of sponsoring my Japanese wife.
I have a question. On FORM 5540 where it tells you how long do you resided in a foreign country, from when till when, what should I write?
I am still living overseas, so should I just fill in when I started living in Japan, and leave the till when area blank?

Thank you in advance!

Put in when you moved there, then when you print it, write in PRESENT. They generally don't want anything blank :)

I was in the same situation. I just put the date that I started living here and then when I printed out the form I added ¨to present¨ in pen.

Make sure you prove that you will be moving back to Canada!

good luck

I entered the 'to' date with the current date and attached a note explaining that the date entered on the form is to present and I am still living here. For our rental agreement, I did the same thing but included the expiration date on the lease (and included a copy of our lease agreement).

I don't think it really matters which way you do it, as long as they can understand it.

Hi Parker24 & Nessa,

Thank you for your quick reply!

I was just going to write PRESENT after printing out my forms. But, as everyone likely knows, the Government can be a pain in the rear when it comes to filling out forms.

Nessa - I am getting my sister and parents to write me letters stating our plans when my wife gets her PR. That should suffice, right?

Thanks again!

Cheers,

J

Hi Fencesitter,

Thanks for your reply!

I might send my lease agreement, too. However, I would have to get that translated. I thought about doing the translation myself, but I don't know if it would be accepted.

Thanks again!
