Hi,

I am a Canadian woman marrying a Kenyan man. I love him very much but want to be smart about marrying him, can someone tell me what my legal obligations to him would be after we were married and what steps I could take to protect myself. Our plan is for him to come and join me in Canada. Thanks!

If you sponsor him as your spouse and he is approved, you are financially responsible for him for three years after he lands. This means that if he goes on social assistance / welfare during those first three years - you will be responsible for paying this money back to the government.

There is currently no way to protect yourself from this financial obligation. You must agree to it as a condition of sponsoring your husband.

CIC has made statements about introducing changes to the spousal sponsorship rules through implementing a conditional spousal visa. However I don't believe a date has been announced for the launch of this new program.

Make sure before you marry him, he is not look after your citizenship or money. There's a lot of horrible stories that canadian sponsor being dumped with their foriegn spouse once they land in Canadian soil. Be careful sweetie for the sweet words of your husband to be because it might be turn you in a bitter life, bankrupcy and frustations. A friendly advice. Good luck

the best way to know someone is by being together day in and day out :) talking on the phone and short visits don't always help; also read stories here and learn from the signs the other had; if u r worried and need to reassure urself maybe a few months together before marriage will help convince u: some traveling, living together, etc....yes probably it is not easy to be done but it's better than being sorry later :)
