Hi.. I am Canadian citizen married to a Syrian woman. We've just had our first baby outside Canada. Will the baby be Canadian??? How much time does it take to get him the citizenship?? What am I required to do to accomplish that??
Note: I have not sponsored my wife yet..

Hello!

Your child will be Canadian, in need of their Canadian Birth Certificate if you are a 'first generation' Canadian yourself.

So, if you were born in Canada (edit, or BECAME a Canadian as per the website), that child is Canadian. If you were born to Canadian parents outside of Canada, you will be needing to sponsor your child to this fair country.

As it stands, your child's children will need to be born in Canada to be Canadian, otherwise if they are born outside of the country, they will be also in need of sponsorship.

Here's the website showing:

cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/citizenship/index.asp

Under the question, "What does limiting Canadian citizenship to the first generation born to Canadian parents outside Canada mean?"

Cheers~

Hi

We had the same situation. My boyfriend is Canadian and we had a baby outside Canada. We applied for a citizenship for our baby and got it after few months. I think we used this application http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/minors.asp

We applied for sponsorship for me later, and I think it made the sponsorship application easier for us, we didn´t have to include our baby in the application since he was already a Canadian citizen.

The child does not have to apply for citizenship, but you have to apply for proof of citzenship for your child. Your child will need a citizenship certificate in order to apply for a canadian passport. Make sure you fill out the right application. The link above is wrong. Your does not need to fill out an application for citizenship, but rather the application for proof of citizenship. You as the parent need to provide your citizenship status. You can find the information on the cic website

Yes, you need to apply for the proof of citizenship, they are already Canadians if you were born in Canada. I am living in the US now but am a Canadian. My kids were born here in the US, 3 and 5 years ago and I applied for their proof of Canadian citizenship last year and then got the Canadian citizenships for them about 5 or 6 months later. I am due with another baby in a few weeks and will apply for him as well soon after he's born.
