Hello,

I have lived in the UK my entire life however, I have Canadian citizenship from my Mother. Im currently at University and so is my girlfriend, after I graduate I plan to complete a masters prior to moving to Toronto in 2016. Obviously, my girlfriend wants to come as well and we want to start our life in Toronto. We plan to get married before leaving for Canada so I will be sponsoring my spouse. My question is though, as I am a student will they not think I am able to financially look after her etc? Also, when would be the best time to start submitting documents in we want to move Autumn 2016?

Thanks.

Outland applications are taking around 10 months at the moment, but that could change . Start collecting as much information as you can right now .Photos of you and the further wife together. Show history together. You will have to have some kind of plan of moving back to Canada. for e.g. rent agreement, some family ties may be letter to family stating your plans with your new wife, how you are going to afford to keep the both of you.

You do not have to earn any money to sponsor your spouse , but they will want to see how your going to manage . Toronto is very expensive to live. Try looking on the outskirts to live. Do you have any family here at all???As you can see i am a Taffy. Will help you out as much as i can.

Hi Taffy, thanks for helping out!

I only have friends in the city and in Orangeville now. As I said my mother got Canadian citizenship through naturalisation in the 70's and moved back to the UK in the 80's. She then met my dad and I was born in 91. I have lived in the UK my entire life but it has always been my dream to live in Toronto. I have sorted my citizenship (received my certificate), sorted my SIN number and am awaiting my passport to come through the post. I graduate from University in the summer of 2015 and then plan to do a one year masters degree which will finish in 2016, that is when we plan to move.

I have been with my girlfriend for 5 years, we plan to get married within the next year so we will not have to apply as common law partners. However, like I said, I am just worried about the fact that I will be a recent graduate with nothing but savings and a part time job to back me up. We won't have anything like a rental agreement as our plan was to stay in a hotel for a month or so whilst finding a condo downtown to buy. I have some money I am entitled to that I can get prior to moving which puts me in a position to place a deposit for a mortgage. Also, I should get a job pretty quickly with a bachelors degree and masters degree.

Therefore, I just need guidance on the timing of the application I think, Should I start filing everything after we are married here in the UK and about 12 months prior to wanting to move? Or should I start now?

Even if you get married you still need to prove your relationship is genuine. So start gathering all that information now, it takes longer than you think.

Your future wife will need to do a medical exam. The results are only valid for 12 months. The VO office will give you a date that the your fiancee needs to enter Canada by. Often this date depends on when the medical expires (although they sometimes do extend it).

So I would slowly prepare now and send your application about a year before you want to move.

also the forms are updated regularly, and CIC will send back the application or request the latest forms to be filled out. So of course, it's ok to fill out the forms ahead of time for practice. when sending the application, you are going to want to be sure you have the latest copy of those forms to submit.

Apply after you are married for sure . Definitely have a look over the forms, this will get you familiar with what you will need Addresses. any jobs your girlfriend has been employed in , school history. Your medical in the U.K is around 300.00 pounds . She will also need a police certificate from Acro that is 45.00 pounds . Don't do any of these until you are about a month away from sending you application. For the police certificate you will need to supply one recent colour passport photo and it has to be endorsed, you will find a full list on their site . Also will need two proof of current address for your girlfriend. One important thing is to make sure your girlfriend don't get any criminal records. It will cost you $1040 right now, best to pay every thing upfront to avoid delays .

By the way i am about 20 mins from Orangeville and from their you will be an hour and 10 mins to Toronto. My sister has a condo in Toronto so if you don't want to go to a hotel we can set you up there for a month or two.

Condo sounds very interesting if you could PM me the details that would be fantastic. As well as sorting out my girlfriend future wife I have to sort out all the paperwork for our toy poodle who is coming as well, although that is all pretty simple. Okay so I'm going to start collecting evidence now in preparation to send the paperwork early next year maybe? That will give 18 months prior to when we want to move so allows plenty of time.

What sort of evidence shall I collect? and do you just include it within the envelope when sending the documents?

The toy poodle will be simple just make sure all vet exams are current. You will have to contact the vet at the airport will let you know details when we bring the cat over. Its about 30$ for an exam here , they do it at the airport. Condo is not ready until July 1st will keep you up to date with that one. Birthday cards, photo's with family , the wedding photos receipts from that any receipts you can find that makes you a real couple Keep photos of any gifts . If you can get a life insurance for each other, don't have to get one that covers you over here. If you do your taxes file as common law. You will have 3 ...#1 one for you sponsorship #2 will be the application and # 3 will be the proof of relationship . Take a look around the site there our lots of threads on how to prepare this , it helped me tons.
