In yet another attack on an Indian in Australia, a 31-year old cookery student was viciously stabbed in the stomach by two men after he finished work in a South Yarra bar early this month.

The student who did not want to be named underwent an emergency surgery and had a 26-stitches on his punctured bowel after the attack on November 5, AAP reported today.

He said the two men approached him in Lovers Walk South around 11:10 pm as he walked to a railway station. They asked him for money, and when he said he had none, he was punched and assaulted. "One punched me in the stomach, scolded me and said dirty words. I collected some courage and ran away."

"It wasn't until he reached South Yarra rail station that he realised he was bleeding and that he'd been stabbed. He hailed a taxi, which took him to The Alfred hospital where he was operated on immediately. The victim, who has been in Australia for two years, spent the next 10 days in hospital, and only then did he let his parents in India know what had happened.

Victoria police is now appealing for witnesses to the attack to come forward. "It was a very callous attack, and we want these two men off the streets," according to a senior police official Emma Frankcom. She said the attack did not appear to be racially motivated. "It appears to be a random attack," she said.

Over 100 incidents of attacks on Indians, including racial, have come to light since May last year in Australia. 21-year-old student Nitin Garg, who was stabbed to death here, was the first victim of such assaults this year.

Well, thats your own choice but I have heard that Australians are more racist and unwelcoming towards new people coming to their country. And although they have better weather than Canada but the cost of life is not cheap at all. The question is not how easy/difficult is to immigrate to a new country, the question is are you prepared to take what that country has to offer you.

Very well said Adnan....
Cheers!!

Most of what has been said here is a load of rubbish. Australia has much lower racism than Canada, and a better level of education. There is a reason so much of the worlds scientific breakthroughs come from Australia, not Canada.

The supposed (and few) racist attacks that were reported in the news were found to be in no way racially driven. It was simply something interesting for the commercial news channels to latch on to.

Canada is much more backward than Australia, though the people are amazingly similar in their attitude. However, I have never met any people as welcoming and truly helpful as Australians.

There are some community ( don't want to name here) in certain area of Australia who are trying to make "Semi-India" in that area which nobody will accept or tolerate in any country. This goes on and on & everyday bad news comes for Indians which is really disaster for India-Australia relations.

I myself is Indian but have heard this from one of the Australian in my company.

Cool

Indians are the same everywhere, so why does it happen only in Australia? Why not in USA, Canada, UK etc?
We have much bigger China towns in most developed countries, why is that not a problem?

FYI , except Pakistan, North Korea & one more country somewhere in the North Atlantic Ocean, Indians or people of Indian origin are residing in all other 170 odd countries existing in the this World.

That just goes to show how dynamic, adaptive & resourceful Indians are, running economies of the entire World.
It's easy to point fingers, but very difficult to appreciate.....

I think dear you are too emotional here. Other people have provided the right reason. It can be a small minority group creating tensions but obviously don't reflect whole country.

Thanks
