Canada Success Story

Hello Fellow Members,

While my story is not typical and will probably get a lot of rejections and negative reviews (because I am gay) I felt like it might inspire others in similar situations so here is my story.

My partner and I met online years ago (we are a gay couple) got married and well the long distance marriage was really tiresome so we decided to apply to Canada together. We are both on our mid 20s.

We applied under the post June 2010 rules and used an amazing consultant to help us prepare our file (while I have read multiple opposition of people using consultants in this forum, I did my homework and choose the right guy). Given the complexity of a long distance gay marriage I was sure that having a consultant would help me make my case stronger and it certainly did. As expected, CIC asked questions through our application and with the help of our consultant our case succeeded and we finally got our visa at the end of last year.

As soon as I got PPR I started applying for jobs (I had dome my research months ago and found the competitors to the company I was working in the US that had a branch in Canada). Needless to say, the day I got PPR I sent my resume and cover letter to one of the companies I had identified and got a call the very next morning for a job interview. The interview was done over skype and a week later a received a job offer for 100+k.

In January this year we both embarked to our new life in Canada (Calgary). So far Calgary has been an amazing place. I have never been happier. People are very accepting and don't judge and I feel very welcome.

My partner has been studying English at the University of Calgary and working par time in retail (got a job after a week of landing) and loving it as well. He can't wait to begin his undergrad studies.


My previous posts tells all the hurdles I went through during my application process. I am more than willing to help others with Immigration and Job Searching Questions (My technique was to find the HR Manager directly of these companies through Linkedin and it paid off).

Anyways, you read so many discouraging stories in this forum that I felt I should share a success one.

I believe we all have our destiny in our hands, perseverance and hard work all pay off

Canada and all people there (ok, most of them ) show and prove once again how warm place they are, even located in the northern part of the world.

Indeed Canadians are very nice people. Alberta as you know is perhaps one of the most conservative places. Nevertheless, so far I have not been bullied or treated poorly once (as an immigrant or gay).
