Don't you have to study for the test, and know silly things like who was the fourth Prime minster, what was his favourite desert, and why is favourite spelled two ways in the Canadian dictionary?

You do have to study for the test but these are not the questions asked :) You can play with some questions on this practice test here: http://www.yourlibrary.ca/citizenship/

No, the questions are even more silly, like, what is the title of Canada's anthem or what do Canadians celebrate on November 11th. :) I was done in less than two minutes and was (almost) the first one to turn my answer sheet in... Some other guy was even faster... :)

Hi,

My mother in law has a Canadian PR and she is eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship but
when she retires in a few years, she wants to stay in her home country for good. She is weighing PR or Citizenship.

If you are Canadian citizen -you can stay outside Canada for a long time
and you are not required to come back to Canada while having a PR, you need not go back so as not to
lose your PR status, right?. Further question is: do you have any responsibilities that you need to do as a Canadian citizen
even if you are outside Canada like filing your CRA tax? Is there anything that will forfeit your Canadian Citizenship?

Thank you for any replies.

That's right.

That's right which would affect her if she loses her PR and then changes her mind about living in Canada, maybe she becomes disabled and nobody is there to take care of her in old country

No, if you are not living in Canada and have no assets in Canada, you can have yourself listed as a non-resident for tax purposes. I am not sure how it works though if she is getting a pension from Canada though

Is there anything that will forfeit your Canadian Citizenship?

Only if they find out that you have lied to get your citizenship or to get your PR or possibly treason

If one is a non-resident for taxpaying purposes, and gets a pension from Canada, there is a withholding tax at source. The default percentage is 25%, but might be less if so stipulated in any tax treaty between Canada and the "home" country.

You can also be a non resident of Canada for tax purposes if you do not live in country BUT have assets in Canada.
