Hi,

Wanting advice from anyone who has got their Canadian Passport.
I haven't had my oath yet, (will probably be in the next 2 months) however the person I plan to use as my Guarantor will be away soon so I am hoping to have the application filled out beforehand.

It says on the passport form " All three pages of the application form completed and signed within the last 12 months and certified by the guarantor"
" two photos taken within the last 6 months"

So I was thinking I could get all the forms done before my oath ceremony but then I'm wondering do I have to technically be a citizen when the guarantor signs the forms and dates it?

Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks!

From https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-passports/travel-documents-references-guarantors.html :

Basic guarantor requirements
Your guarantor must:
  • be available if we need to contact them
so if your guarantor will be away soon, does that mean they cannot be contacted by the passport office? If so that may cause delays/difficulties for your application.

I don't know if you need to be a citizen to complete the application form. You could contact the Passport Program to ask them, as they should be able to tell you (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-passports/contact-passport-program.html)

You didn't read the form...
It specificaly asks you to sign a declaration saying that you're a canadian citizen. You can't fill it and date it in advance.
Also, you need to fill the form and sign it everywhere BEFORE you give it to the guarantor.

So, no, you can't do that.

I received my citizenship in December and I plan to travel in July. Do I have to get a Canadian passport in order to do so?

I should note that I'm an American-Canadian dual citizen.

So according to that article, I’m fine with my US passport and either my NEXUS card or citizenship certificate and don’t need to have the expense of a Canadian passport
You really should get a Canadian passport and associate it with your NEXUS.

I assume you updated your NEXUS records that you have Canadian citizenship. Don't you need to specify a Canadian travel document?

When I became a citizen, I got a Canadian passport and when to a NEXUS office to add that I am a Canadian citizenship and replace my Canadian travel document information (from PR card to passport)

Can you please explain this process? I'm a Nexus card holder, and plan to go to an enrollment center as soon as I receive my new passport (just became a citizen few days ago).

Did you set up an appointment at the enrollment centre? Or just walk in? What did you say - you need a document update? How long did it take you in the enrollment centre, and what questions did they ask? And how many days did it take to receive a new Nexus card (or was it given on the same day)?

Where are you going? I know at Pearson you don't need an appointment. Just go in and put your name on the appropriate list and wait to be called.

It was a walk in at YYZ. You put your name down on a list and then wait to be called. I did it last minute because I was at the airport early for a flight and checked the NEXUS office and saw the list was small. So I decided to do it right then. I waited about 15 minutes then they called my name. I went up and said that I wanted to update my documents - that I became a citizen and wanted to update my records with my new citizenship and my new passport info. Took like 5 minutes.

Thanks for the info. I see now it also actually says the whole application needs to be filled out before guarantor signs it, and I won't have my Citizenship certificate number until the ceremony so I will have to wait. Thanks for the info.

I'll still get the passport then. I think it might actually be more of a pain to carry the certificate around in a folder than to pay the fee for the passport every 10 years haha.

Agree with the points of others - you can't do so and do need to find another guarantor for such a case. There's no big deal about filling the form, it can be done online because the GC website allows doing so, like this one for filling ds11 forms for the US passport. It also could be done with the Passport Office. Yet nonetheless, it's barely the solution for your case

Although, the thread is old, I'd like to express my opinion on this topic. There is no problems in filling form, it can be filled online, there are a lot of forms in the internet, which can be filled online, for instance this one https://pdfliner.com/ds_11_form. The bigger problem is in changing the guarantor, cause at least he could advice you a person who could replace him. Hope, nobody'll face such problems
