Hello everyone,

I have a peculiar case with my situation. I came to Canada in 2014 with a visa + study permit as a student to do my PhD. In the meantime, in 2015, I obtained a green card from US through the DV lottery. However, due to cost of travel and demanding PhD, I have not been able to visit US since September 2016. My previously issued visa + study permit expired in June 2018. To tackle this problem, I did an online application (where I selected I held a valid GR), and I was only sent the study permit. At that time I did not realize that as a valid green card holder you only need an eTa to go back to Canada. So I tried boarding a flight to Canada when I was in Germany, but was not let on the plane because I only had my study permit. Long story short- can I apply for an eTa as a valid green card holder? In other words, can I still be considered valid for eTa to enter Canada, given my green card has not expired yet and the US officials have not officially labeled me as "abandoned" status yet?

Thank you and it's urgent so I am truly appreciative for a prompt response,
Tijana
