My husband officially has his permanent residency in Canada; however, before coming to Canada he was a permanent resident of Sweden. Now that he is here, is his Swedish permanent residencey still valid? If it is, for how long will it remain valid?

My husband was only 6 months away from being able to become a Swedish citizen, but he could not stay in Sweden to become a citizen because his Canadian visa would have expired long before then. He was just wondering now that he is here as a permanent resident if his permanent residency in Sweden is still valid?

Is there a way to keep his permanent residency in Sweden valid or is it just automatically gone? My husband thinks that his residency is still valid, but I think otherwise, and we just want to make sure.

Thank you!

If he wants to go for Swedish citizenship, he should go back to Sweden and pursue that. As a PR of Canada, he can be outside Canada for up to 3 years in his first 5 years as a PR. I assume that after a certain amount of time outside Sweden, he will lose his Swedish PR.

Check the swedish PR obligation rules. He can be a Swedish citizen if he choses to go for it and then maintain a PR for life or vise versa.

So my husband's Swedish PR still is valid?

I was previously told that once he leaves Sweden and gets his Canadian PR, that he would automatically lose his Swedish PR.

So now I'm confused ::) . . . I don't know what the case is now???

You'll have to look up the residency and citizenship requirements for Sweden. Using Canada as an example, you have to reside in Canada 2 out of every 5 years in order to maintain PR. Once you have 3 out of 4 years residency you can apply for citizenship. That means you can leave Canada twice for 6 months (or 6 two month trips, or 1 year straight, etc) within a 4 year period and still be elligible for citizenship (or stay here 3 years straight). Sweden will have it's own rules and without going to them you won't know. (Will try to look it up but I'm at work right now).

Sadgirl,

I just checked from your first post that you said you are Canadian citizen. So, each day your husband accompanied you in Sweden counts for his days for satisfying the Canadian residency obligations.

If your husband wants to go for Swedish citizenship, both of you should go back to Sweden and pursue that.

For your easy reference about how to keep Canadian PR status, check this link http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5445EA.asp

Hopes this helps
