Can you get the medical exam done before getting married?

I was just wondering that because my girlfriend is going for hers right away but we haven't actually been married yet and I was wondering if it would cause any problems later?

My wife had her medical done before marriage ( Tested on Dec. 23/09, married on Jan. 8/2010 ) We went in together on my last visit with her over Christmas. I sat with her and the doctor as she was being tested.

I decided that it would strengthen our case. We are a couple. We went as a couple, and now we want to live together as a couple. My only concern is that she won't be approved quickly enough and will need to be retested. We won't be submitting the sponsorship application until March.

Hope I am right. Looking forward to the opinions of others.

I believe the medical is good for a year. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) :) So if you are sending out the app in March you should be fine.

One thing you might want to think about: On the form you're supposed to fill out, they ask what your current relationship status is. We decided to check 'spouse' even though we weren't yet married, but we were so sure of our choice to marry that we considered ourselves already married. An explanation will accompany our application. This may have been a mistake, so think about this before you do the medical.

I rationalized at the time that by the time the application appeared in their office, we would be married. As a result, the relationship status on our application and on the medical report will both appear as "spouse". Otherwise, there would be a discrepancy which could cause problems.

You should give your status on the day you sign the form. If you are married that day, check married. If you are not, don't. If you make up your own rules and start changing things around to what is not true in reality you can cause serious problems with your application, but under no circumstances will you help your case.

The reality is that Schedule C has no check box for a person who is neither married, conjugal, nor common-law. Therefore, you have no choice. You must check the box describing your status at the time of sponsorship application, or wait for the medical test until after you are married. Better to simply include a note with the application acknowledging that you weren't yet married, or don't get the test until after you are married.
