Hello everyone,

I believe this would be a better place to post this topic. If any moderator is seeing this, can you kindly delete it from the International Students section. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Anyhow, referencing back to the subjected topic, I would like to start my CMA (Certified Management Accountant designation), and I am qualified to write the entrance examination. I am just not sure whether I can do CMA while on a post-graduation work permit. Do I require a study permit? Any feedback would help. Also, would be highly grateful if anyone can provide some sort of official reference i.e. CIC website etc.

I must also mention that my post graduation work permit states that "unless authorized, must not attend any educational institution or take any academic, professional or vocational training course". What does it mean?

Thank you in advance. Hope to hear from someone soon!

Regards.

Hi,

Study Permits are required for those courses for which you need admission in Canadian institute. In your case CMA Is a professional designation for which you need enrollment to association and not any admission.
You can also join any institute providing coaching for CMA exam preparation which is less than six months of duration.

Similarly, If you go for CFA you do not need study permit. Please confirm with CMA association for mandatory qualificationa because for CGA only Canadian permanent resident can enroll.

Hope this answer your question completely.

Thank you very much for your response. I completely agree, and it makes perfect sense. I did call CMA Ontario to inquire about this, and they do not require a study permit. Essentially you just need to have met their requirements, and you are good to go.

Is there any official website where I could source further information on this? Would CIC people know about this? I am applying for CEC PR program soon, and understandbly, I dont want to jeopardize my application/chances.

One member had a similar query and posted this link yesterday: http://www.mun.ca/isa/immigration/faqs.php

It's still a good idea to confirm with the cic call centre.

Not only Canadian resident can enroll in CGA, but also international students. And study permit is required for CGA. I am current working on post graduate work permit and I have just applied for study permit extension for my CGA

If you called CMA and they said you dont need a study permit then you shouldn't apply.

Refer to page 30: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/op/op12-eng.pdf

Thank you for the replies. And Thank you very much Senorita for providing the link. As per the definition and my understanding now, CMA is not allowed as it falls under Professional Course.

This is depressing!

Its not allowed by just having a work permit , but as on the earlier posts for CGA topic, if someone applies for the study permit they can take that course. This is what I think , but not 100% sure.

Yeah, probably. I will dig more into this, and will update accordingly.

On a side note, I am trying to send a personal message but its not allowing me to do so. Anybody know how to fix it, or how I can send a personal message? Thank you.

Probably because you had less than 10 posts. ;)

Yeah, probably lol.

Btw. I did call CIC ... and they mentioned that Study Permit is required to do CMA or any education in Canada for that matter.

I personally know of someone that started the CMA process while on a PGWP and completed when he became a PR. That is, started the AP and SLP on a PWGP and finished off as a PR without any issue. If the CMA said you would be fine, I would just go ahead and register.

Hello Red & Black

I find myself in the same situation right now and have already started my accelerated program when I thought about the study permit. Any info you can provide on how you proceeded would be useful. I am unable to send you a personal message. Any info you can provide would be much appreciated, thanks!
