Can US citizens obtain a study permit at a point of entry? Specifically Buffalo New York.

Hi I’m in Canada and have been for 6 months. I applied for my visitors extension as I am staying with my girlfriend. I recently just got accepted to a Canadian college for welding. I Paid my fees and I was wondering if I could leave the country turn around and come back, and go to the Canada border and apply for a study permit? Thanks.

Make sure you bring evidence that you have paid your first year tuition fees and also evidence that you have at least $10K in your bank account for living expenses.

Thanks. I will be living with my girlfriend rent free. I can’t say I have exactly 10,000 dollars but I have enough to survive during my studies. Will that be ok?

Hard to say. You are supposed to have $10K regardless of whether you're living with someone or not (this is assuming it's at least a 1 year program). If you apply by paper/online and can't show the $10K - the application will be refused. It's quite possible the same thing will happen at the border. It would be far better to be able to show you have the required funds.

It makes me quite nervous because after my tuition is paid the school will be writing me a 5,000 check because the loan I was approved for was more than the cost of tuition. I saw something about 833 CAD per month. Could I just have my parents write a letter saying they will be giving me 833 dollars a month for my studies in Canada?

You will need to show their bank statement and their bank statement needs to have a balance that covers the total amount required (i.e. bank balance of at least $10K). They also need to provide a letter confirming they are supporting your studies.
