I just dropped out my 3rd semester because it was extremely difficult, So now I am taking a mix of courses from 3rd and 2nd semester in a different program.. I am just wondering that if I am part time which is 18 hours a week can this affect my PGWP...I really want a PGWP after studying here!.

Hi,

If you have studied all courses as a full time student, but enrolled in the 'last semester' as a part time student because only very few courses left to complete your all credit hours, even thn you are eligible for PGWP.

I do not know what will happen if you get enroll as a part time student in the 'mid of your semesters' (not being the last semester' but I think your school won't allow you to register as a part time student, I mean Full time students are supposed to register for the minimum number of credit hours which maintain their full time status.

I have one more question and that is that in my summers holidays, i took a course which i dropped in my second semester, that would not be an issue right?

Hi,

Yes.

In short, to get PGWP only 3 basic things are required:

1. Studied in a recognised school.
2. Finished all courses as a full time student except the last semester with certain conditions.
3. Must have studied a required number of Credit Hours,

so it doesn't matter if you dropped or register again or whatever. Its not length/duration of program but the total Credit hours thats make a difference specially when you are going for a 3 year PGWP.

I guess i am doomed than..But i dont understand the fact that why even going part time in summers just to take the course i dropped can effect my PGWP so adversly, I mean i am full time in all of the other semesters and if i could i would be able to take that dropped course in my second year but just for my ease i took it in the summers..I cant understand why it is such an issue...Is it 100% sure that my PGWP will not be rejected or there is still a possibility that I can get it if my college gives me a letter?.

Hi,

I think you should refrain yourself from registering as a part time student in the mid of your semester terms. It may be risky! It does not matter if your school allows you to do so; you may not get proper justification at the time of applying for PGWP.

Just read the rule;

“If in your last semester of study you are registered as a part-time student because you only need a few courses to graduate, but you have been studying full-time during your studies, you are eligible to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.”

I do not know if its suitable to pursue a course as a part time student during your summer term, but I think school do not allow International students to get registered as a part time student and all International students are supposed to take minimum number of courses which maintain full time student status.

And it doesn’t matter how much time you take to complete your all courses. You can definitely pursue a dropped course but may be not as a part time student in the mid of your semester term. The successful completion of all courses is more important thn the time taken to complete them (of course with in a maximum time as mentioned on your LOA). But you won’t get any benefit if you are completing a 1 year course in 24 months, you won’t be eligible for a 3 year PGWP.

Well all i can do is get my fingers crossed and hope i get my PGWP..Because if i dont than the whole reason for me being in Canada is lost...I hope i get it..

Does that mean if you're going for a 2 year masters prog ( max limit being 4 years) you can drop a semester or two (due to financial or other issues) and get your study permit renewed, wont affect ur 3 year PGWP in any way ?

Hi friend,
I have kind of the same situation as you have right now. My program is 3 years, and I drop 3 courses so I have to wait another year to retake it which make my study into 4 years. So, did you got PGWP after you drop courses in your 3rd semester?

Please help me
