Can one person in a married couple apply individually, and then sponsor spouse?

If one person in a married couple has individual points to apply for the PR, but as a couple their point is much less. In that case can one of this person apply as an individual and then once they get the PR, apply for the spouse? Is that allowed? Would that cause any problem? In the meantime can the spouse get a multiple entry visa?

You can't apply as single if you are married. You must include your spouse in your application. If you fail to include your spouse and say that you are single - then you will never be able to sponsor your spouse later. Also, you will be committing representation (lying in your application) - which can result in your PR status being revoked.

You can select that option but since you have mentioned that spouse will not join you in Canada, so you will be awarded points as a single applicant, which is usually little higher than what you will be getting as Married applicant.

So In short, if you have declared your spouse will not join you, I believe you will not be able to sponsor her later when you are a permanent resident of Canada, as you have already declared your intention in your PR application. Otherwise all the married people will try filing as single and then later sponsoring their wives. So it's a kind of misuse of the system and CIC might already be aware of it.

I agree with aquarian25... would like to add though, it's also possible that you apply as married couple but your spouse can come at a later date as long as it's within the visa period. for instance you need to fly within july2015 to feb2016, your spouse has the option to fly in at feb2016 even if you fly in at july2015

That is possible. You can declare your spouse as 'not accompanying' for now but they will still be part of the application. You can then bring them over on spousal sponsorship - that is a separate process and takes anywhere from 12-24 months.

I believe this is correct from my research and this is what I plan on doing if I don't get ITA in the next draw as am stuck on 450

I'm not sure but I imagine that it might not be easy. They will have to show close ties to their country of residence so that they have reasons to return and that will be tough with their spouse being a PR. Not sure how this would work out.

You would need rock solid proof for spouse not accompanying option...
But it is possible and you would in theory be able to sponsor them later on.

You can add your spouse to your application at any point of time in the process before landing in Canada.

At any point in time AFTER eAPR but BEFORE landing in Canada would be fine.
