Can i work full time on dependent(open) work permit while my spouse is studying

Hi All,

My spouse is taking admission in college for Ontario graduate Certificate/Post Graduate Certificate in Ontario. As per my understanding i can apply for open work permit as dependent at the same time for the same duration(1 year). Am i right? If yes, then can I work full time (7.5 hrs/day) while on open work permit (dependent work permit)?

My spouse has already applied in colleges and most likely she will apply for study permit in march end, after getting the confirmation from colleges.

Thanks in Advance

Thanks Wilson,

My wife is taking admission in sheridan college or seneca college in GTA. So on her study permit i am eligible to apply open work permit. But I am not sure about that i can work full time 7.5 hrs/day on open work permit or dependent work permit. Even i am not able to see anything on cic.ca or in link which you provided regarding my question.

Thanks

OK. I understand your question.

Spouses of certain foreign students Can obtain a open work permit without having to obtain a confirmed job offer from HRSDC.
Under an open work permit the spouse of the student can work under any employer, any where in Canada.
I could not see any where about working time restriction which specifies that he/she should not work full time. Whereas, the length of the open work order will be limited to the validity of the student's study permit.

This link shows what is Open Work Permit but not showing the working time, what you are asking.

I am going to apply for an open work permit to canada from India, since my spouse is an international student already pursuing higher education in toronto.
My question to u is if my open work permit gets approved for 12 months and supposedly I get to go to Canada. But Can I come back to India and then again re-enter Canada during the visa validity.
kindly reply back to me..
regards

hey,
Thanks for ur prompt reply..
but I can not apply for 2 visas at the same time..like open work permit also and TRV also..
i have confirmed, when i will be applying for open work permit, i am asked to fill a form of TRV (schedule 1 form), but in that form there is no question which asks for a multiple or single entry..
so if my open work permit gets approved luckily, i will be getting trv also to enter the country for sure..but weather that trv will be single or multiple, i am not aware of it..
so how will the high commission get to know that if u grant me open work permit, pls grant me multiple entry trv?
or shud i write a cover letter along with my application , mentioning that I need multiple entry?
please revert back to me..
with warm regards,
Jish

Hi Jish,

To enter into Canada you need visa if you are not from a visa exempt country and the permit is the document for legal status in Canada. When you apply for visa you will be given worker visa and you will be issued work permit at the Port of Entry in Canada. The application has changed since we applied for my wife. I checked the new application and it doesn't state anything. I believe the type of entry will be decided by the Officer. Let us hear from other members too.

Hi Wilson,

I didnt see anywhere that i can work only full time or part time. So hope for the best. Even my manager also went Canada in same way, his wife attended college for post graduation certificate and he worked full time during that time.

JISH,
Its upto immigration officer that he will give you single entry or multiple entry. And if you get single entry you can apply for multiple entry. My friend did the same, he had single entry work permit after post graduation and then he applied for multiple visit individualy.

And about the open work permit, if your spouse is pursuing higher education you can apply for open work permit. If both of you are entring same time you can send application in single envelop, and if you want to join your spouse on some later date, you will have to apply individualy.

I am also doing the same thing and my wife is taking admission in sept 2012 course, we will apply for both study and work permit in march end means after getting the confirmation from college. If you are also doing on the same time we can share our experience.

Thanks everybody

Hi Drmohan,

What kind of changes has been done after you? You mentioned that "The application has changed since we applied for my wife".

Thanks/Preetkamal

Hi,

We applied for my wife's open work permit in 2009. The application had an option where we can ask for multiple or single entry.

Yes, spouse can work full time on open work permit.
