Can I use my laminated citizenship card or do I need to apply for a citizenship/naturalization certificate?

Hi All,

I'm a Canadian citizen, not born in Canada but naturalized back in the 90s. Back then they gave us laminated citizenship cards. Fast forward to 2020 I am having a daughter outside Canada (in the US). I am trying to apply for a citizenship certificate for her. Can I use my laminated card as proof of my Canadian citizenship, or do I have to first apply for a citizenship certificate myself before applying for one for my daugher?

Thanks everyone in advance!

Yes - I have the one they stopped giving out in 2012 :D.

I was just concerned because in the CIT0014 form it says please provide:
- Birth certificate
- Parent's Canadian citizenship / naturalization certificate

but does not mention citizenship card. Hence the confusion.

Thanks for the linked info

I would gladly pay for the cost of a citizenship card today if given the option over the paper certificate. With embedded micro chips and the photo digitally imprinted on the card itself, I don't see how this could not be considered a safer option today.
