Hy everyone! My husband (canadian) holds a private health insurance because of his job and he put me as beneficiary of the same insurance. They didn't ask him about my status in Canada which is the one of a simple tourist at the moment since we are waiting for my PR.. my question is: is this insurance really valid for me too? Who can I contact to find out?

He will need to call the insurer to confirm if coverage can be extended to you - this is the only way to answer this question. His worksplace will have a number he can call to speak with the insurer to confirm coverage. Typically workplace insurance policies can only be extended to family members who already have provincial health care coverage.

Impossible to comment without knowing which province you're living in.

Unfortunately no. You'll have to wait until you become a PR.

You should probably check with the insurance, but think it's not possible unless the insurance company says it's okay.

Definitely check with the insurance company. This is essential so you know exactly what is covered – you wouldn’t want to find out you don’t have coverage right after you get into an accident, for example. If you are not covered there are short-term “visitor” plans that you can purchase while you wait to be included under a work plan or a family plan. They are worth looking into.

Generally the coverage is only supplementary (dental, prescriptions) to provincial insurance and usually requires you to be covered by a provincial plan to get benefits.

1. In order to qualify for OHIP in Ontario, you have to receive a PR status. Once you get it, you will still need to wait about 3 more months (standard waiting period) to get your OHIP card.

2. If you are not eligible for OHIP, you cannot get a Health (with and without prescription drugs option) and/or Dental insurance coverage, as being currently enrolled in the Provincial Health Insurance Plan is one of the main requirements to apply for private health benefits, which are supplementary. Yet, your husband may speak with his private insurance provider to determine whether you can get covered right away, which, as I believe, is not likely for now.

What you can do is to get a private medical emergency insurance coverage for the duration of a waiting period before you become eligible for OHIP.

It is not true that you cannot be covered by private health care insurance unless you are covered by OHIP.

My employment health benefits are with Manulife and my spouse was covered by my plan for over a year before receiving PR and OHIP.

I've been on my partner's work insurance (dental, vision, prescription) since we became common-law. The company that provides his doesn't care about my immigration status, only our marital status. It's certainly worth investigating.

These are requirement to get eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if you are included under one of the following categories:

1.You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or landed immigrant, or are registered as an Indian under the Indian Act.

2.You have submitted an application for permanent residence in Canada, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada has confirmed that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

3.You have applied for a grant of citizenship under section 5.1 of the Citizenship Act (Canada), and Citizenship and Immigration Canada has confirmed that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for citizenship (i.e., children adopted internationally by Canadian citizens).

4.You are a "protected person" - i.e. a Convention Refugee or a person in need of protection.

5.You are a foreign worker who holds a valid work permit or other document issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) permitting you to work in Canada, and you also have a formal agreement in place to work full-time for an employer situated in Ontario which sets out the employer's name, your occupation, and confirmation that you will be working for no less than six consecutive months.

6.You are a member of the clergy who is legally entitled to stay in Canada and will be providing services to a religious congregation in Ontario for at least six months.

7.You hold a Temporary Resident Permit with case type 80 (for adoption only), 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94 or 95.

8.You are the spouse, or dependent child (under 22 years old or 22 years and over if dependent due to a mental or physical disability) of an OHIP-eligible member of the clergy or OHIP-eligible foreign worker.

9.You hold a valid work permit under the federal Live-in Caregiver Program;
you hold a valid work permit under the federal Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program.

From my point of view you should wait until you become a PR.

Hi, when your spouse was covered by your plan, did she have permanent SIN? My husband tried to put me on his health benefit, but they needed my SIN, and I only have temporary one.
