I am hoping to visit my boyfriend for 6 months in Canada, as a visitor. What i'd like to know is that if i decided to apply for permanent residency either through marriage or applying as a skilled worker, can i stay with him on an extended visitor visa whilst the PR application is going through?

I don't understand how we can prove that we are common law partners who have been living together for a year for example, if i can't extend my tourist visa?

Thanks

You can apply to extend your visit visa but you still have to prove that you can support yourself and that you are only in Canada temporarily.

i can't support myself because i won't be working, he will be supporting me, is that not valid?

It is valid, you get a letter from him saying he will support you and send copies of is 3 last pay slips as well.

Am really interested in your question cos am planning to do the same too. No one has answered that part that says

Thanks for your answers Leon.

So how do you prove that you are only in the country temporarily?

I will have a return flight ticket, and i own a house, but that is all i can think of.

My main plan is to go over for 6 months, then him come back with me for 6 months. The permanent residency thing was only an enquiry, its not something i'm thinking about seriously right now.

I'm really scared that immigration are going to think i plan to stay forever, i want to be as prepared as possible so that they let me stay for the full 6 months, confident that i'll go home at the end.

Thanks
