I am studying for a PhD programme and after doing an internship for a US company, I've been asked by the company to be engaged as an independent contractor from Canada (after my internship with the company).

My question: is it allowed for international students to open a sole proprietorship business? I understand the remote work must not more than 20 hours per week.
Note that this type of job is related to my doctoral research.

Thanks.

You do not need to register a sole proprietorship to work as a independent contractor. Registration is required if you wish to operate as a trade name different from your own personal name (and open a bank account under that name)

Are we allowed to work as Sole Proprietor for US company from
Canada remote while on student visa.

please help.
