Can I legally do freelance work while on closed work permit

Hi,

I have closed work permit and was recently laid off. My work permit is valid till January 2016 so I know I can legally be here till then. I have to be in Canada till January so I'm interested if I can legally do freelance programming for non-canadian company/client? I want to 100% sure of that as my PR application is in process too.

Generally speaking, you can perform work which has absolutely no impact on the Canadian labour market. So, freelance for a foreign company, paid from outside Canada, with none of your efforts being used in Canada, would probably be OK. However, you would be subject to tax on that foreign income by CRA.

Hey I'm in the same situation can we apply Bridge open work permit? I heard BOWP isn't for closed work permit nominee.

Hi Richard,

it is for ppl with closed work permit, but for BOWP expiry of current closed work permit must be within 4 months and you must have received AOR. I know you can apply if you applied for PR under CEC. Not sure about other programs. Hope this helps.

hi everyone, i am also on a closed work permit, i would like to start publishing in kindle amazon publishing service. is this allowed as i may be getting royalties from around the world while continuing my closed work permit ?
