On the application form for citizenship under 3B it said" request for a different name to appear on certificate and please indicate reason below" and below it are 4 boxes, and one of them is Legal name change.

So if I want to legally change my name , I just have to check on the Legal name change box right? And then write my requested name below?

No. You would need to legally change your name first. This is a separate process. You can't use the citizenship application to legally change your name. This check box is there for people who have already changed their name legally and for this reason are requesting a different name on their citizenship certificate.

You're correct. I checked that box for a name change for my son without including the official document that proves the name had already been changed. The CIC sent a letter to request for the document that shows his name has already been changed. I wrote them a letter that I thought the name could easily and simply be changed during citizenship application process, and that we haven't gone through the formal process of name change. I then advised that they should disregard the request for a name change that was made on the citizenship application.

Should change my name legally first and then complete my citizenship application form second?

You need to apply to legally change your name first and wait for that application to be approved. Once that application is approved, you can use your new name in a citizenship application.
