Hi experts in this forum,

I have a valid PR card that expires in Nov, and I have just submitted a PR card renewal application while I am in Canada (9 months in advance, as permitted per the renewal rule). My question is, while I wait for them to process my application, can I leave Canada with my current PR card? I will return before my current card expires so for this particular trip I actually don't need the new PR card. My worry is, by the time CIC officer gets to look at my application, they will see that at that time I'm not in Canada, will they refuse to process my renewal application for this reason?

Yes you can leave Canada; They will still process your renewed application.

As you apply this early, the bad thing could be, the new card is issued and your old one turns revoked...

Thank you both. Yes, I read somewhere that the old card will be invalid after 60 days of the issuance of the new card. Thanks for the reminder.

One more question, my old card expires on Nov 2, is the earliest date that I can renew Feb 3? I wanted to see how exactly the "9 months" in the "you can renew up to 9 months in advance" is interpreted? Is Feb 3 considered within 9 months of Nov 2?

This may happen IF you have not met the R.O. when the application is received. If you have met the R.O., you should have no problems.

Regarding you returning after that 60 day window following the issuance of the new card:
Issuance being the key part, so if the card is issued and mailed, but gets lost somewhere along the way (and you had no idea it was even in-transit) the current valid card could be invalidated without you knowing.

Will you continue to be compliant with your RO when you leave Canada? It looks like you have been in Canada for over 5 years so you will have to continue meeting the 730 days in the past 5 years on any day you are outside Canada.
