lovebajan,

Can you share your story about the IO giving you a hard time when you came back in Jan? What happened?

Thanks.

jaune,

Well, my flight was delayed in Barbados about 2 hours...that trip for Christmas was due to the fact that my hubby entered his Country's Home For The Holidays contest and won. Before then, I was in Barbados from June 24-August 31 (we were married in August)...so like I was saying, because the flight was delayed in Barbados and it wasn't a direct flight, I had to go to Toronto. We arrived around 10:30pm in Toronto...I was tired as ever, (new I was pregnant but hadn't had a test yet, just felt it!!) I didn't get any sleep, so my eyes were a little red...plus I have locks (dreadlocks) I'm sure the io thought I was high because of how red my eyes were. Anyways, the customs officer asked me if I had anything to declare. I told her I only had two small duty free bottles of rum I bought there. She said alright...I went to get my bags and a male io stopped me for my passport and flight info...I gave it to him, he asked me if I have anything to declare and I told him only 2 small bottles of rum...he wrote some number on my declaration form then said I could leave...went to collect my bags then was stopped at the next check point where I was told to go into a room with my bags and wait for the io I just saw...a few minutes later another io told me to sit and wait for the io to see me...I did...the io that hassled me came and asked me to open my suitcase and carry on...he searched my purse, suitcase and carry-on as he asked evasive questions.
1. where do I work 2. how much do I make 3. why do i travel to Barbados so often 4. do I have any children 5. did I have to take courses to get my job (Early childhood educator) (mind you, I had completed immigration application in my suitcase as my husband and I were working on it during the trip) I had a phone # of a parent, whose child was in my class and he asked why I have his #, what he did for a living (he's a comedian) 6. If I was going to sponsor my husband 7. If we had any children together...I only spent 13 days for this trip...he asked me why I have so much undergarments and not much clothing in my suitcase...I told him well, I washed my clothes yesterday b4 packing and it rained early this morning there, so whatever was on the line was wet and I left there. Who puts wet clothes in there bag! (It's the truth, he may have not believed it but...) Anyways, I had a bag of pads in my bag from last trip and he asked about them...I told him I never took them out from my last trip!!! All of this was pointless to me!!! He said, alright you can pack up and go try to see if you can get the last connecting flight!! ...............I don't like Toronto airport for this reason!!!!!!!! My Canadian passport meant nothing to him, he stereotyped me...labeled me as a druggy because my eyes were red and I have locks, that's all!!!

I answered all his damn questions politely...

Brutal. Once they know you are a Canadian citizen they are not supposed to ask about your work, reasons for your trip, or anything else. Sometimes they really push people around.

ENF 4, 9.2

"Once the officer establishes that a person is a Canadian citizen, the
examination should end and the person should be allowed to enter Canada without further delay."

Well, I'm not sure what his aim was! I wanted to complain...however, I'm not sure it would do anything...
oh, he even asked me how old me and my husband were...I'm about 5 years and 9 months older ( this may be a problem in my application...I'm 27, he's 21).

Like all authority figures, some times some of them get on a power trip, and abuse their power. They may not like it if you push back, but as a Canadian citizen you're in a much better position than a FN or PR to remind them that they shouldn't be pushing people around. (A foreign national could simply be denied entry, and a PR pushed around a lot more.) Letting them know that you know what your rights are can help. If they get pushy, try calmly asking "You've seen my passport, are you satisfied I'm a citizen?" ... (yes) ... "so I can go, right?" You could be more assertive, e.g. "I'm a Canadian citizen, you're not supposed to be asking me any more questions" but that would likely escalate things more.

In the end if they get away with pushing people around every day, with nobody calling them on it, they'll keep doing it.

I felt like being rude, I just didn't want any problems...I just wanted to get a connecting flight home...or I would have had to spend the night in Toronto...I need to know who I could have complained to?

Go here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/index.asp and start reading. There is a lot of information there and there is a lot to know. Your wife's aunt may or may not be able to sponsor her. It depends on certain conditions. Beyond that, I don't think the aunt can sponsor you, but I suppose your wife could nce she completes the process. It takes some time for everything to be approved, so I don't know that getting the aunt involved will bspeed andthing up, even if she is allowed to do it.

BeShoo thank you for the quick reply. If i may ask again, is it possible to sponsor my wife through tourist visa only and not permanent resident classification by her aunt? Which in my point of view faster than sponsoring to be a PR.

So your wife doesn't actually want to immigrate to Canada, she only wants to visit her aunt? Her aunt can write a letter saying that she is inviting her and will take care of all expenses etc. but your wife still needs to apply for a visit visa and prove that she is only coming for a visit and will return to her home country after her visit.

If she is only coming for a visit, you should post that in the "Visitor" section of the forum rather than the "Immigration" part. I don't know a lot about it, but I think she needs an invitation and it doesn't necessarily have to be from a relative. Assuming her citizenship is from a country that needs a visa, she'd need to send that invitation with her visa application, I think.

It might be faster to get a "temporary resident" visa (that's what a tourist visa is called) than a PR visa, but the temporary visit won't help at all in moving permanently, if that is your goal.

I'm assuming she is Filipino. Visitor permits are mostly processed in Manila 2 day to a month after they are received. Permanent resident visas for "other" relatives mostly take 4 to 24 months through Manila. If she wanted to live in Canada with her aunt for those 2 years without working or studying, there is a possibility that she could get an extension to the visitor visa until she heard the results of the PR visa application.

Sir BeShoo, yes she is a Filipino. Correct me sir if I am wrong with my plan. I have an immigrant application to Canada here in the Philippines while I was still single, to be exact Feb 15, 2008 when I submitted my application. We were married Aug 2008 but I havent updated my marital status with my application. So here is my option plan because of the very long long wait of my application hehehe, I opt to update my marital status while my wife is on Canada or before she goes there. Is it possible for her to look for a potential employer while she is staying there and go back here in the Phils. to prepare all the docs needed by her employer. And when she has stayed in Canada long enough, that's the chance my application will start moving.

Hope to hear from you sir. And thank you very much for the time rendered to my endless queries. Warm regards
