Friends I need some advise...
I am told that for a short landing, it is advisable to book one way air tickets only...land in Canada and then book return tickets from within canada (for going back to home country)
reason for this is that a return ticket may pose problems at the time of entry and Immigration Officer may not be satisfied about my intent of staying in Canada
please advise...very confused about this whole issue
(see the comment by my dear friend devilhimselff) Also One more person has told me this...

You and land and go back anytime, even same day. The immigration officer will say nothing, but on knowing about that the immigration officer would not start the process to send you PR card.

No need to panic or complicate the landing process for yourself! My wife and I landed here few weeks ago and my wife returned home after a week on a return ticket.Buy your return ticket and just like others have told you, tell the IMO at PO the truth. However you may need to give a Canadian address to the IMO for PR card.

I further need to add that IMO doesn't need to bother whether you are leaving after a week. So, it is beyond argument that you need to tell IMO truth or not. Bottom line is he'll ask you to provide with Canada address where they'll send the PR card by two months (typical current time frame, as IMO & call center confirmed in our case).

Even you don't receive the PR card, you can re-enter Canada with the issued Travel doc from the Can Highcommission of your country of residence (issued once in a life time!).

Well written Sayek!Did you actually re-enter without a pr card to hand? Were you asked by the airline to show pr card?I think this subject can sometime be very confusing :'(
I placed a call to the call centre recently asking about traveling out of CAnada without the pr card(am from visa exempt country). The call center officer told me that the airline will request for the pr card prior to boarding and can refuse boarding!!!!

Dear Louth,

After short-landing, my friend has re-entered Canada without PR card, but with Travel Document. CIC Call center officer correctly informed you that boarding will be denied without PR card. "But will not be denied if you have the issued Travel Doc from Can High Commission from your country of residence". Regarding this info, I got the below confirmed mail from CIC last May 16, 2012.

Pls also check "travel document for permanent residents abroad" of the respective Country's Canada High Commission site.

Sir, Madam,

Thank you for contacting Citizenship and Immigration Canada. I am pleased to follow up on your request:

Travel Document (Permanent Resident Abroad)

If you are outside of Canada without a Permanent Resident card (PR card), you must apply for a Travel document (permanent resident abroad) at a Canadian visa office before returning to Canada. The application is available on our Web site. You can fill out the application on-line and print it or print it and fill it out by hand. The travel document is only valid for one entry. Once you are in Canada, you should apply for a PR card.

Please note that a PR card or travel document is required for all permanent residents returning to Canada on a commercial vehicle (plane, train, boat or bus).

If you return to Canada in a private vehicle, the PR card is not mandatory; you can use your immigration document (i.e. Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688)). An officer will ask you questions to verify if you meet all of the requirements before allowing you to come back to Canada.

For more information on the PR card, please consult:

The FAQ;
The processing times; and
The Operational Manual – Enforcement (ENF 4) - sections 11.1 to 11.3.>>>>

Hope the confusions of the concerned are well-clarified.

Thanks & Regards,

SAYEK
