I've been in BC for just over 5 months, living with my Canadian fiancée. We've been together almost 2 years, I arrived here on December 11th. We're expecting a baby in about 4 weeks. I started my job with my sponsoring employer on January 5th.

My problem is this. My employes going through some major work issues and are laying people off. I'm here on an LMIA, which I hope gives me a certain amount of immunity. Is it possible for me to get my work permit altered for another employer if I can find one? Or alternatively, can my partner sponsor me? I'm sure this isn't the best place to ask, and I'm sure it's been asked before. If anyone can point me in the direction of some helpful information I'd be extremely grateful. As you can imagine, I'm a little anxious right now.

No - you can't switch employers on a closed work permit. If you want to switch employers - your new employer will have to obtain an new LMIA, then you will have to apply for a new closed work permit - once the new work permit is approved, you'll be able to switch employers.

Your fiancee can sponsor you for PR once you are either married or common law (common law means you have lived together for at least one full year continuously and can prove it).

That's pretty much what I thought. I've been approved for express entry anyway, so I'm going to plough on and hope for the best. Thank you for your response :-)

Hey! I'm posting this for my friend. He has lmia workpermit. He received ITA; did medicals and have submitted all his paperwork. However, his store is going to be taken by new employer next month. Can he change his lmia under new employer ? His workplace is still the same.

Thanks
