Hi! I hope any of you can help put my mind at ease. I've been diagnosed with two mental disorders, borderline and avoidant personality disorder to be exact, and I'm worried if these would count as "serious mental disorders" and prevent my husband from sponsoring me. I read the question about mental disorders after a long list of questions about violence and criminal history, so I figured they are asking this because they don't want you to pose a threat or become a financial burden to society. So if I don't pose a threat and I won't be a financial burden, should I then even mention that I have these disorders, or should I mention them but then not worry my head over this? I'm just really confused (and worried). I hope some of you know the answers! =) Thanks! (btw, I'm from Denmark, Scandinavia, if that has any relevance)

For Family Class I always thought they pretty much were okay with most disorders unless you were seriously contagious and could put many lives in danger if you came to Canada. Like, you have Ebola or something. I don't think mental problems that are under control are a big deal. If they caused you to commit crimes that would be in your police record.

I have been diagnosed with BPD in the past, although am doing much better now. I have also been hospitalized because of it and disclosed everything to the panel physician when getting my upfront medical done. The physician told me that CIC might require a consultation with a psychiatrist to make sure I won't put too much burden on the healthcare system, but CIC never ended up asking me any questions about my medicals. I'm 99% sure I've been approved, as we now have Decision Made on ECAS without any requests from CIC at all.

I ordered GCMS notes, which list my medical as passed, with the remark "Has a condition for which the potential demand on health or social services is not sufficient to exclude admission under Section 38(1)(c)."

You should mention the disorders, IMO. Risking misrepresentation is not worth it. You will have to mention them when you get your medical done anyway.

Hope this helps!

Family class are exempt from excessive demand anyways.

Some groups of permanent resident applicants are exempt from the excessive demands assessment:
family class sponsored spouses, common-law partners and dependent children
convention refugees or people in similar circumstances and
protected persons.
According to the law, a spouse, common-law partner, child or other family members of these permanent resident groups are also exempt.

Just to confirm the replies of others - it shouldn't be an issue.
