Can I apply open visa while holding 2 yrs work permit?

I am a foreign worker with a valid work permit same as my common law partner, We applied for permanent residency as my partner as a principal applicant and we're just waiting for the results, Now my question is can I apply for open visa even we already passed all my documents with my valid work permit for our permanent residency application, will there be a confusion from the immigration about my status? And if I ever been approved and got the open visa will my work permit will still be valid? Will that means I'll ne holding both open visa and my 2 yrs. valid work permit? Please help!

I think you can should extend your visa as a temporary worker if it's expired soon
or you can extend your work permit/visa 2 months before it's expired
