Hi, we received a call from a CIC Agent who had questions for us, and they asked we provide the last 3 digits of SIN to identify us... We refused to provide it as we had no way to confirm this was really a CIC agent (they didn,t provide ID# or name) and it seemed strange.

Whenever we called the service center, they never asked for that info in order to identify us... so it made us very uncomfortable.

Tried calling the service center to see what's up with that, but can't get the line.

In your experience, is it normal for CIC to call with questions and ask to provide last 3 digits of SIN for identification purposes?

Thanks!

Thanks. It's still unclear tbh. They did have info on our file that no one could've known unless they had our application, so that's what's weird...
They said we could provide our answers to the service center, which I called and they had no record of a call being made to us... THey said it might be from Mississauga but couldn't confirm this info. I was so rattled I forgot to ask about the SIN part, and have been unable to get the line ever since to ask about that...

ALso, we have AIP, and service center confirmed that our app is finalized and is only awaiting final decision... so it seems weird that they call for further questions, no?

So confusing.

The CIC link clearly states that:

To avoid telephone scams, remember that IRCC does not:
  • ask you to confirm basic personal information you already provided on a form.
Also, IRCC never calls or emails you when they need information from you. If they want to ask you, they send you messages through your GC account.

Regarding that last comment, they do call. I knew people working for IRCC and they would sometimes call directly the person who's app they were working on to ask questions, so it does happen although I do believe they usually go through the GC account route. Which is also more logical as it leaves a paper trail of the process, whereas calling does not.

There have been other reports of strange calls where the caller appears to have had an unusual amount of personal information.
There is a suspicion that some of this has been obtained illegally by some scammers.
You did well to not respond to the caller, as it was most likely a scam. Do they even have your SIN from your application? Did you provide it with the application forms?

You are absolutely right. I just looked at the forms we submitted, an no where did we provide the sin number... This is very worrying. Thank you so much.

Hi - IRCC doesn't deal with SIN numbers. They're unlikely to know someone's SIN number or care about it.

I never experienced this particular problem, but I did read some reports at http://whycall.me telling similar stories with you about the IRCC scams, so I'm pretty sure it was a scam call. I agree with above replies that this was 100% scam.
