Can an international student run an on-line business?

I got accepted to Columbia College for September this year. I haven't sent my study permit yet because I'm trying to arrange for custodianship since I'm 18. Anyway I just started making money out of a hobby selling my hand made crafts and hair accessories in my home town. People really like them and I'm planning on putting up a website where I can sell my crafts on-line. I really enjoy what I do and I love having my pieces out there. When I go to Canada this September, will I be able to continue with this small business? Is it considered 'work'?

Yes - this is considered work and is illegal without a work permit. If you are making any money, it's work.

Even though it's not a steady income? Once I get an off-campus study permit will I be able to continue? Also would there be any restrictions if I sent my crafts to my brother in my home town while I'm studying in Canada to sell for me?

It doesn't matter if the income is steady or not. Paid work is paid work and it's illegal without a work permit.

Your brother can continue selling your items in your town back home (you just can't sell anything in Canada).

I would suggest you call the CIC to ask about the off campus work permit. The off campus work permit limits you to working a specific number of hours per week and I don't know how they classify a online business where you are making money based on the number of items you sell rather than the number of hours worked.

Actually I talked to an admissions officer in person from Columbia College when he came to our country to recruit students. Both groups of students taking an Associates Degree or a University Transfer Programme are allowed to get off campus work permits after 6 months of study. It even says so on their website.

Y'know I'm afraid I don't fully understand what you guys consider 'work'. According to the above statement 'if you're making money, it's work'.

So say I was moving to a residence that was closer to my college after a couple of months of studying and there was something I needed to get rid of in my apartment like a bed or a heater or even a shower head adapter because there'd be one at my new place. If I were to sell it to somebody, I would be violating my conditions for staying in the country??? Since as mentioned 'it doesn't matter if its not a steady income'. So whenever I want to get rid of something I have no use for I can't sell it, I have to simply give it away? And as a student paying international fees with no source of income and making a day to day living off my parents money it's pretty hard to just throw away stuff like that.

If that's the law then it sounds pretty unfair to me.

Please note where it says Associates Degree, there is University Transfer next to it in brackets. Also on my acceptance letter it says University Transfer(Associates Degree). If you're not convinced I can upload a picture for you. And like I said I talked to the admissions officer IN PERSON in front of my Dad at the 'Study In Canada' fair here. I doubt he would say something like that if he weren't sure.

Sorry - I'll clarify. Selling your furniture is fine. However if you are making a product or offering a services for the primary purpose of earning income, that will be viewed as a violation.

Per the CIC site (which is the ultimate authority on the matter), you will be fine as long as you are in either an Associate of Arts Degree or Associate of Science Degree program.

So it sounds like you are good. For the record, we have seen some instances where schools representatives have lied/misrepresented if obtaining an off campus work permit is possible. So sadly this does happen. But once again, looks like you're good.

Hi,

1. Just for your information: As you are a transfer student, you shall get a PGWP only if your passing certificate/transcript is issued by your school in Canada. And, you will get PGWP only for the length of time you studied in Canada (not as per the course duration).
