Dear forum members.

I'm a PR resident since two years. My wife lives in Jordan. I want to bring her to Canada.

I'm filling the forms for sponsorship for her.

But I'm afraid that the sponsorship my be declined because since two years I'm not working. Although my wife has a bachelor degree and have a work experience, and the guide does not specifically require the husband in such a case to be employed.

I want to ask, can my wife apply independently for skilled worker immigration? to me that may be a more guaranteed pathway for her to come to Canada, or I'm mistaken?

Please help me. I'm confused.

Thank you all.

Sam

Hi Sam,

RE your eligibility to sponsor your wife, the more important question related to your unemployment is - how do you support yourself? If you have millions (ok, maybe not millions, but at least 3 years' worth of living expenses for both you and your wife) in the bank, then being unemployed doesn't matter. But if you don't, you won't meet the income requirement. Or, if you receive government assistance, the instructions do state that you are ineligible.

Yes, your wife can apply independently, but the bigger question is, how will she qualify? There are fairly narrow eligibility requirements for the Federal Skilled Workers program...

Thanks Jes-On and Explorer101

Yes there is no income proof required for spouse sponsorship, but there is in the sponsor evaluation form questions about the employment and total last year income.

why do they ask about income if it is not required? i'm worried.

Thanks

Let them ask any questions or collect any data, it would not affect your application for sponsorship.

OK - good news, explorer is right, in the OP 2 it states that sponsors are exempt from the income requirement if they are sponsoring a spouse, see p. 24, 5.33. Exception to minimum necessary income requirement.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/ip/ip02-eng.pdf

However, you are ineligible to sponsor while you are on social assistance (p.22) (Hypothetically - not saying you are!)

BTW - if your wife is eligible to apply as a Skilled Worker, there's no reason you can't apply both ways.
