Can a Principle Applicant do the landing before Spouse?

Hi Seniors,

I've the following two questions:

1. As a Principle applicant, can I complete my port of entry at the Buffalo border as my wife is waiting for her visa stamp on the passport?
2. Will I able to request for a new SIN number based on the COPR letter after completing the landing or should I have to wait until my PR card will arrive?

Just to give you a snapshot, I reside in Canada so have applied mine and wife's PR which has been approved and I've received my passport and COPR letter in Canada. However, my wife has submitted her passport to the visa office in her country so rightnow we are waiting for her documents to collect which is taking longer than usual.

As for the SIN, mine is going to expire very soon that's why I'm worried whether if I have to wait to apply for a new one or I can apply after completing the port entry process. Currently, its showing 72 days processing time to get the PR card.

Seniors, any advise would be highly appreciative!

Many thanks,
JK

Yes the principal applicant can land prior to anyone else included in the application. Other people included in the application for PR cannot land before the principal applicant.

No you do not have to wait for your PR card to get a SIN number. You can go and get a SIN number immediately after landing with your COPR document.

Thanks for the response. The reason to seek other experiences is an informative document about Canada which I received along with a COPR. On that document it states in bold "Please wait for the visa office to issue the CPR to your family members before you go to a CIC office or a port of entry to become a PR."

Above statement seems generic to me which could apply in certain cases but I could be wrong.

Did you receive an additional document along with your COPR letters stating the quoted statement?

Were you a PA who lands first as your dependent was waiting to collect the passport?

Any input would be much appreciated!

You should wait for all document processing to be completed. The logic for this is that, if at the last minute a dependent is deemed inadmissible for whatever reason, so is the Principal Applicant.

Hi Zardoz,

Thanks for your input. You have made a valid point which should not be taking up lightly. However, have you heard from any who's visa was ready to be stamped and last min they changed their mind?

I really hope things will go smooth for my spouse because we are done clearing all the stages.

Thanks alot!

Yes, I think there was a case reported on here yesterday where they reopened the application after decision made. http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t311602.0.html

Thanks for sharing the other post Zardoz. It's quite unfortunate to see reaching at the final stage and been asked to reopen the application.

As that applicant was a resident in Quebec and their program is bit different than Ontario or other provinces so I could see a reason behind reopening it. I hope he finds a solution soon and work out in his favour.

Anyhow, thanks once again for the info.
