Can a pregnant international student get any health support?

Hi everyone,
My husband is a returning Canadian. I'm going to Canada with him on this September with a Student visa. My case is I'll be 6th months pregnant at that time and I'm so worry that we may not be able to afford the hospital fee when I give birth on December, if without any health support. May I ask:
- Question 1: Can my husband apply for my inland sponsorship immediately after we landed in Cambridge, Ontario, even he has been 4 years away from home + doesn't have any income in Canada at this moment?
- Question 2: If Yes for Question 1, can I apply for OHIP while waiting for AIP?
- Question 3: If No for Question 1, is there any programs in the area that could help with the situation, or even just reduce the hospital fee?

- You will not qualify for OHIP while waiting for AIP. To qualify for OHIP, you not only need to have AIP but also the open work permit approved and then also secure a job that is at least six months long. This isn't going to happen before the delivery of your baby.
- I am not familiar with what health care is available to international students. I would recommend you look into that. Private insurance is not an option at this point since you are already pregnant (it's only possible to buy private insurance to cover some of the costs of pregnancy before you actually get pregnant). In terms of lowering the costs of the delivery, look into midwives. You'll want to do this asap given you don't have much time left before your due date and given their services are under very high demand.

If you are a student who is already pregnant UHIP doesn’t cover your pregnancy costs. Unless something has changed you would be responsible for all your appointment fees and delivery. Are you actually planning on studying? No matter what you need to plan for 10-20k in potential costs for your pregnancy. In terms of midwives you still have hospital fees and the majority of women who want to be followed by a midwife are turned down because the demand is so high and there are a limited amount of midwives. I know many women who try to be followed starting in the first trimester and are turned down because the practice is full. You should certainly try but you must arrive and be prepared to pay out of pocket for all your costs. If you can’t afford the fees you may need to change your plans.

If you are concern with covering the cost of child birth, it may be better to defer moving back to Canada and plan to have the child in your current location/country. Your husband can start sponsorship right now from outland. Since the child will be citizen, your family can move to Canada together after your PR is approved.

I think that once a person is in this situation, then help should definitely be provided.

In a situation, they themselves put themselves into ? Seriously? So the individual in question has no responsibility whatsoever ?
If they can’t afford to pony up the costs to have the child , then pray tell how are they going to afford to raise said child , THEY elected to conceive? The o/p said herself the citizen has no income in Canada , currently.
It’s called taking responsibility for one’s actions . In other words “ adulting “. I assume they are an adult , since they’ve elected to come from overseas to be a student , ( which we all know are extremely expensive) and pay international student fees, so I smell money here.
