Hi everyone, me and my family are doing the spousal outland application and eventually we're thinking about going to Calgary (mi wifes brother lives there).
I have never been there and just wanted to ask anyone who's been there or lived there your comments about the city. How beautiful is it, is it a good place to raise a family (3 kids), tranquility (is it a safe place to live, low crime rates for example), job opportunities, how good are public schools for the kids, weather etc etc. If you guys can give me any more important information great

Thank you

We live in Calgary. So far I have been very happy here. Beautiful views of the Rockies. Banff is close. Seems to have many opportunities. The school system has been great with helping me enroll my kids and my youngest son just started this past week and really seems happy at his school. He also has been taking snowboarding at Canada Olympic Park and they offer a great program. I live in NW and it seems very safe. I haven't been here long enough to check everything out yet but so far so good.

Also, how about housing, how much will a house outside the city (suburb) cost? 3 bedroom 175 sq meters

thanks

Live in Calgary and really like it. Public transport is good for the most part, close to the mountains and it is the sunniest city in Canada :) https://www.currentresults.com/Weather-Extremes/Canada/sunniest-cities.php

Well I am from California so my views on traffic may be skewed ;) Traffic doesn't seem bad to me but my husband complains about it during commute times. I would guess depending on the neighborhood a house in the NW suburbs would run between 400,000 +

Most Canadian cities are pretty good, however it all depends on your priorities. Some cities have good weather, lower taxes, lower house prices, etc

Having said that, Calgary is a solid choice, as are most Albertan cities (I live in Edmonton). I really like Calgary as its close to the US border, Rockies, Banff, Lake Louise, etc. However the house prices are very high, although the average household salary is very good. You cant go wrong w Calgary.

I myself enjoy living in Edmonton, despite not much exciting to do here. However, the house prices are cheaper ($100K less than Calgary's average), salaries are only slightly lower than Calgary, and there are tons of trade jobs to do (my job is an electrician). And like Calgary, Edmonton pays only 5% sales tax while other provinces have to pay a staggering 13% on things they buy in most provinces. 8% is a pretty big difference considering it applies to almost everything you buy

Again, it all depends on ur priorities.

Thank you very much with all these calgary seems like a good choice. Still worry a little about house prices. For example if i would like to purchase a house in a suburb say around 30-40 minutes from downtown/city is it possible i find a decent/ok 3 bedroom house/apt in a peaceful neighborhood for around 300k can dollars?

Thank you

Yes. Check out mls listings in Calgary and you will find a good mix of houses/prices. Also due to the downturn in the economy prices of homes are steadily dropping and it is likely that by end of 2017 average house price in Calgary will come down by approximately 15% to an average of approximately of $300k.
