Hi all
I'm currently a doctoral candiate in my third year at a top US research university. I am not sure how people here are familiar with how the US graduate school works. Basically, I've been on fellowship and various TA/RA positions in the past three years at the university. As you may know, for getting stipend and tuition waiver, most people work as RA/TA (which means 50% of time devoted to working for research projects that may or may not be related to your dissertation). As an unspoken rule, these positions all require you to work full time as a doctoral student.

Anyway, that means I have 3 years of 50% time paid TA. When I apply for FSW, can I claim those to be full time positions? Also, I worked under different professors but within the same field under the same program. Does that count as continuous work experience?

Thanks and that pretty much determines whether or not I am eligible for the new FSW. I appreicate any response.
Marco

If this is for points, then definitely it counts.
However, it doesnt count for ministerial requirement as a TA NOC.
It won't count for minimum requirement because that requires full time, continuous one year experience.

I am no expert, so wait for others to answer too.

Thanks Maaties
To count for the min eligibility for FSW, one should have one year continuous full time work expeirence or the equivalent of that, which could be paid part time. I guess it take 2 years of expierence? Was mine experience continuous?

There is a difference between minimum requirement and ministerial requirement.

Your experience does sound continuous. You didn't take a break in between right?

Ok. I looked it up. I think I am eligible under biologist and other related scientists. My research experience as the requirements for my doctoral degree wouldn't count into this category? enlighten me

In order to qualify as a ministerial requirement, it depends on your job duties.
As a TA, you won't qualify but perhaps your duties match an NOC on the ministerial list.

Minimum requirement is that you must have one year full time continuous work experience in an NOC of skill type 0, A or B (not part time experience).

Thanks. I think I meet the min requirments:

be a skilled worker who has had one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time paid work experience in at least one of the following eligible occupations within the last ten years:

Where can I see the NOC duty description? I looked up and couldn't find any.

Let me ask this:

Do you have one year of continuous full time experience in your life (not part time for 2 years, but full time for one year).

I actually worked as a full time business developer for a year developing business partnerships (JVs, outsourcing, etc) between the company I worked for and oversea companies(mostly US pharmaceutical companies). However, I looked up under pharmacist catogry:

Industrial pharmacists perform some or all of the following duties:

* Participate in basic research for the development of new drugs
* Formulate new drug products developed by medical researchers
* Test new drug products for stability and to determine their absorption and elimination patterns
* Co-ordinate clinical investigations of new drugs
* Control the quality of drug products during production to ensure that they meet standards of potency, purity, uniformity, stability and safety
* Develop information materials concerning the uses, properties and risks of particular drugs
* Evaluate labelling, packaging and advertising of drug products
* Promote pharmaceutical products to health professionals

It seems that what they decribe didn't exactly match what I did in the company..... What can I do?

Find any NOC that fits a year of full time continuous work experience you have. Look at all the jobs listed in Classified elsewhere under the above NOC.

Also look at 1122.

Here are the requirements:
1) you need one year of continuous full time experience in any job of skill type 0 A or B. The above job duties should fit an NOC of job type 0 A or B.

2) you need one year of continuous full time (or part time equivalent) experience on the ministerial list (29 jobs listed). I think you have that.

3) You can get points for work experience of up to 4 years of equivalent full time experience (you can list the two jobs that fit (1) and (2) above as well as other jobs to get up to 4 years).

thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So to get points, the jobs one will base the points on don't need to fall into the same NOC catogery or one of classified 29 occupations?

What if my job doesn't extecaly match the description? How/where to justify or is there such as justifying your position in the documents?
