Hi,

I am working as a software engineer for an IT firm which provide solutions for Capital markets (Stock exchanges etc.)
I have been programming in C++ on a solaris environment for about six years and have a very good back ground on OOP.

I am interested in migrating to Canada with my wife and kids. Would I be able to find employment in the above field in Toronto.
My experience is specific (C++ on solaris for capital market solutions) and I have no experience on C++ windows programing.

Under these circumstances would I be able to find a job ?
If there's any one on this forum who is doing a job with similar experience please reply this post or mail me - bug.friends@gmail.com

thanks in advance

Though I am not in your field I just wanted to let you know that there is a very good demand of IT professionals in Canada. My opinion is that you start processing for your PR application as it is a time consuming (lengthy) process. Once your PR is done, you can decide whether to live in Canada or not. About job market in IT field is pretty easy from my observation. At first they might not give you a job directly due to your outside Canada degree, however, try to get one or two certification course after you come in Canada.

Wish you good luck.

I work in the IT field, I'm a Computer Engineer. I’ll be probably be moving to Canada within the year.

From what I know, although the demand for IT professionals is high, Limiting yourself to such a narrow field (C++ on Solaris) is either going to be very bad (most likely) or very good (if you can find a job in that specific area)

I suggest you go online, take the points test and start processing your application immediately.

And while that is moving (it will probably take years) try and familiarize yourself with other areas, it shouldn’t be that hard for you to go into C# etc... since it seems like you have all the bases for any kind of programming... Make some independent project on your spare time or maybe get involved in an open source project.

Goto a canadian job site and search for C++.
While it may not be as hot as Java or C#, there is definitely a market.
Especially in embedded systems and Linux products, there is a niche market.
With college students studying less of C++ these days, you should not have
a problem.

A big thank you to all of you for replying.

Imjoe,

I too am currently working as a software engineer for a company providing capital market solutions (Stock exchanges etc.)
I have been programming with C++ on solaris , linux etc for about six years.

I have two little kids and the elder one has started going to the nursery.
Since I have to take my family and move, it would be quite a big challenge. And I am a bit worried about finding a job since my specialization is sort
of specific.

Imjoe, Can you please give me your mail address if you don't mind, so that I can contact you directly. mine is bug.friends@gmail.com

Thanks again
