I was never able to track my progress using the receipt number for paying the application fees, but once my sponsor was approved he got a letter in the mail with a Client ID number on it. I could use that, plus his surname, DOB, and country of origin to sign on to the website. I never found much info there (it supposedly gets updates every Tuesday) and actually received an email requesting my passport before the website updated to decision made on my application.
