1. It's a different process when applying from outside of Canada, to inside of Canada.
No matter if you're inside or outside Canada when you submit the application, you 100% want to do an OUTLAND application that will be processed at the London visa office.

The worst thing a visa-exempt applicant can do while in Canada, is submit an inland app. Times are getting worse and worse, now at 16 months for stage 1 + 8 months for stage 2 = 2 years to get your PR.

A straightforward app through London visa office can be done in 8-10 months total. So even if you're residing in Canada at the time, still definitely submit an OUTLAND application.

2. We want to wait until we know what our new address in Alberta will be. (We don't have one currently.)
It doesn't matter. You can always change your address anytime during the processing.

3. I will need to renew my UK passport before we apply, which will take about five weeks from once we have an address in Canada. I want to update my passport to my married name from my maiden name before applying for PR as I believe it will make things simpler in the long term.
Again not necessary. It's better to apply now with your maiden name, then update all your documents to your married name after you get PR.

and for my husband to have a job before we start the application.
Yet again not necessary. There is no minimum income required for sponsorship. He will include info from his 2013 taxes, and can indicate the type of job he expects to get when he returns to Canada.

f pregnant, is it possible to postpone the medical until a safer stage of the pregnancy? About how far into the application process do they request the medical?
Assuming you make the right choice and apply outland, you are supposed to do the medical UPFRONT so submit it along with the application.

If you're pregnant and don't want to do x-ray, the medical portion of your PR application will basically go on-hold and sit there until you finish it.

In general, I can see if you don't want to to submit the app while traveling as it can be hard to gather all the required documents. My best advise if you want to wait until you get back to Canada, is to
1. Once back in Canada in March, submit your OUTLAND application asap
2. Submit it before you get pregnant so you can do the full medical exam upfront
3. Don't waste time waiting for updated docs in your married name, just submit everything in maiden name

Wow, thanks Rob, that's all really helpful info and advice. Much appreciated.
Are there any potential repercussions if I apply as an outlander when I am in fact living inside of Canada when I make the application? Surely that's not allowed?

Thanks again!

If you read the INLAND guide, CIC actually recommends that people thinking of applying inland instead consider an outland application to take advantage of quicker processing times. It's not only allowed, CIC encourages it.

All it means by OUTLAND is that your is processed at a visa office outside Canada. Where the applicant is actually residing at the time is completely irrelevant to CIC. Could be Canada, could be home country, or any other country. They really don't care.

Hi All,

I applied my PR application on feb2014, in toroto, and received on march. In that mean time, I also renew my work permit due to it would be expired on july2014. So under my lawyer suggestion, he put my pr document and renew work permit receipt all paper in the same envelope!! But now I am pregnancy , and my baby will born on April 2015, it's very rush to get my work permit ready and can renew my health card. I called the call center, they said didn't find my work permit application online, it took 10 month long, and he said it will take 3 more month to get process, but I am so worry about if they didn't start my process my work permit, and then I also call my lawyer, he said he sent my work permit with the PR application together, the call center may be cannot find it out:( but I really need my work permit done before my baby born! Please help, I am appreciated it!
