Hi everyone,

ive been approved as PR and received my passport back, so im all ready to go. On the letter that came back with my passport, it mentions having to fill out a list of everything ill be bringing with me, so i dont have to pay tax on it. It directed me to a site for more info...im wondering is there meant to be some official form i have to fill out for this, but i couldnt find anything about a form on it.

Also, the most expensive things i'll be bringing are my laptop and some electronics like mp3 and a camera. The rest is just clothes, toiletries, things like that...no furniture or anything that wont fit into my 2 suitcases. Is it really necessary for me to list all this stuff?

Thanks
Ella

congrats on being granted your PR!!

yes- you have to list everything you bring. There are instructions on the Canada Customs website, I believe. I don't think there is an official form. I think a word document listing everything is sufficient, but i believe you need to bring 2 copies. If you will have anything else following you (i.e. if you are shipping any items) you will need a separate list of those too, and you may need additional copies of that list as well.

You also need to provide the serial number of any items that have one. Customs agents may check to ensure that, for instance, the laptop computer in your bag has the same serial number as you have declared. You may have to pay duty on anything you don't include on the list.

You don't have to list clothing more specifically than i.e. 5 t-shirts, 5 skirts, 9 pairs of pants. 5 books. But, better to list everything, than to run into problems while landing, or have to pay duty/taxes on any of your items. Just type up a list as you pack, that way you aren't writing down anything that isn't going into your bags and you aren't packing anything that you haven't written down.

Here is a link to the CBSA:

http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/menu-eng.html

The form you are looking for is B4A

List what you are bringing across at landing. Use another form for any "goods to follow" that you will be sending separately.

Hope this helps.

It's a daunting process.
I started it when we first decided and were clearing out our house to put it for sale.
I think I already have around 150 boxes labeled and packed. I need to input the rest of the information - I did a spreadsheet as an attachment to the form.
